Police investigating computer cookie threat

Aug 13, 2008
computer cookie contained personal informationWASHINGTON, USA, 13 Aug 2008: David H., regular computer home user contacted local police department about possible cookie threat issue. "I found that one of cookies stored on my computer contain my credit card information: number and expiration date which is enough to withdraw funds from it." - David H. said to autorities. He also bring printed copy of the cookie file opened with Notepad that proves his words.

Cookie was created by online store which David have visited in the past. He made a purchase in that store providing credit card information, but web site scripts have stored it in the cookie on David's computer. David called to webmaster of that online store, but webmaster claims that its safe to keep any private information in the cookies while they placed on a owners PC.

David H., didn't agree with that and have plans to file a compliant to police. One of police officers told us that he have no chance to do anything about that. However, privacy violation is easily proved even with that piece of evidence that David has.

"We no longer use cookies to keep private information" - webmaster said - "and all users are now required to have username and password to access secure shopping." In this way it looks like shopping came more secure, but we're sure that there is thousands other cookies left on computers of the past customers of that web site. And if that cookies will be stolen it will become real financial crisis for somebody, unless they are using something for protection.

Currently David H. closed the case and don't want to continue with investigation as he is worried that his own computer will be taken to police for some time, and he can't do that: "Computer is my job." - he said.
