How to protect your password? Advices.

Jul 28, 2008
secure passwordAccording Microsoft's statistics all of us have about over 10 accounts at over 10 different web sites. But some of us have even more! How do you manage all these logins and passwords? Do you use special software solution for that or keep them in mind? Or on paper? Almost all of you have the only one password used at all web sites, and on your own Windows account.

That's not right. Too risky. That's not secure. You should not have one password, because its easy to hack your online/offline life completely by hacking just one insecure area of yours.

The correct way is to have three (3!) strong (!) passwords:
#1 for insecure areas;
#2 for secure areas;
#3 for local files.
If one of them is being hacked, the other resources is in safe.

Password #3 is being used at local computer only (for protecting files), no web sites. If some encrypted file of yours is being stolen and decoded criminal will not be able to break into your online accounts with the same password.

Password #2 is for web sites that use SSL secure connection (https) on login forms. This guarantee that noone will intercept it, and only you will be able to login to the most important sites of yours. Always check for secure connection before logging in with password #2!

Password #1 is for your Windows account and other insecure sites. As you know your Windows password is easy to hack. As well as some bad web sites can share your password. Don't let intruders get more of it. (NOTE: even this password is for insecure areas it should be strong enough anyway!)

How you can create strong password? Its easy. Remember few rules and you will have one!
Rule 1. Use at least 10 characters. Forgot about short 6,8-char passwords! Its easy to crack them within few days by using software that checks for all combinations. I use 14 character password, however, its easy for me to remember it.
Rule 2. Use UPPercase and lowerCASE characters. This doubles problem for hacker, and doubles all possible combinations.
Rule 3. Dont use common words, your birthday, names e.t.c. which is from vocabulary. When cracking hackers usually use them first by checking all possible combinations. If you want use common word you should truncate it, for example dont use LIFE, say: LIF.
Rule 4. Use some special signs like plus, minus, dollar sign e.t.c.

Here is a sample of good strong password that is created following rules above:
Usa111-222Doll (14 characters length, easy to remember)
I+Lov=LIF4EVER (14 characters length, easy to remember)

Remember, cracking begins by checking all possible combinations. Usually words taken from vocabulary by special software. 6 character length password is cracked within few days. 10 charcter password cracking takes one month. (It all depends on software used and your password, of cause!). Thats why remember one more important rule:

MAIN: Change your passwords on a reqular basis!
See? Having strong and secure password is easy. As well as have three like this.
